From Yurts to Canyon Views: Our East Kootenays Getaway

Back from our Whistler trip, the haze of forest fire smoke continued to plague our valley, and my family and I sought refuge in the beauty of East Kootenays. Our destination was Redstreak Campground in Radium British Columbia, where we somehow, once again, got an incredible last-minute booking with a yurt

Nestled within the heart of nature, we found relaxation in our cozy yurt. It provided the perfect sanctuary for our three-night stay, equipped with three beds, a table, and chairs. While traditional wood-burning campfires were prohibited due to fire safety measures, our trusty propane fire pit kept us warm as we savoured the crisp mountain air under the starlit sky.

Behind our campsite, a captivating scene unfolded as deer and bighorn sheep engaged in a playful turf war, reminding us of the vibrant wildlife in this pristine wilderness.

Our adventures extended beyond the campground, leading us to the breathtaking panoramas of the canyon near Radium Hot springs. As we embarked on a leisurely stroll to a scenic viewpoint, we were greeted by a majestic bighorn sheep perched precariously against the rugged cliffs. We watched as the sheep scaled the cliffside. It’s truly remarkable how they can do this without falling.

As nights descended, we retreated to the warmth and comfort of our yurt, where we spent hours playing games around the table, immersed in the joyous camaraderie of family bonding.

Our exploration of the East Kootenays region led us to discover hidden gems, such as the unique walking path with life-sized statues of the 14 Stations of the Cross. A visit to Olive Lake offered serenity amidst pristine wilderness, while the shores of Invermere Lake provided a playground for our children to play and splash in the calm waters.

Our retreat to East Kootenays demonstrated the restorative power of nature and the joy of exploration. From the peaceful moments spent in our yurt to the exhilarating encounters with wildlife and discovering hidden treasures, our journey was filled with unforgettable memories. As we bid farewell to Radium, we take the North scenic route home.
