Today’s adventure brought us to Depoe Bay, where we hoped to see some whales. We were not disappointed. Not only did we see whales in the distance, but we also watched seals playing right under the bridge. Our first time seeing whales and seals outside an aquarium made this an incredible experience; our girls loved it. We probably sat there in the cool, rainy weather, watching them swim around and play for about an hour.
Depoe Bay is a tiny coastline village with a population of 1400. This cute town is configured for us tourists. They had so many unique little shops along the road that we enjoyed checking out. Leah bought a pair of shark socks at the unique “sock shop,” we all got a bunch of saltwater taffy at the taffy shop. They had so many flavors to choose from, and Jeff and the girls ended up with a bag of assorted taffy for each. As the girls ate their taffy in the back seat, Leah took a bite and out came her loose tooth! She tossed her tooth in the ocean before we left. We told her that she is now, always a part of Oregon.
I highly recommend stopping at Depoe Bay. They also have whale-watching tours, which seem to be pretty popular. We decided not to do a tour and headed back to Newport, where we visited the Aquarium and a new favourite fast-food restaurant called Arctic Circle. OMG, the food was terrific. We still talk about wishing we had one here in Canada.
We took our food back to the campsite, set up the rooftop tent, and started a fire. It was now time to relax for the evening. One thing that surprised me was how crisp the air was and how rainy and cloudy it was in August along the coast. I asked one of the shop owners if this was normal, and he said it was standard for them. He explained that the weather along the coast is brisk once it gets hot inland. Most days we were there, the temperature averaged 12-14 degrees Celsius (53-57 Fahrenheit). Coming from the Okanagan, it was chilly for us as it was in the mid to high 30s at home. I’m glad we packed some warmer clothes!
