5 Essential Tips for Smooth Travel Across the Canada-USA Border

Whether you’re flying or driving across the border into the United States, some key considerations can make your journey as smooth as possible. We’ve compiled a list of five essential tips and tricks to help you prepare for your stateside vacation!

1. Prepare Your Documents

First and foremost, ensure you have all necessary documents ready, including passports for everyone, details of your accommodation, and the duration of your stay. Have your passport opened to the identification page in advance, this will make the border crossing or trip through customs faster and more efficient.

2. Know What You Can Bring

Familiarize yourself with what items you can and cannot bring across the border, including food, alcohol, and specific camping or off-roading gear. A quick check on the customs website will help you determine what is admissible. Remember to declare any purchases to avoid fines and ensure a smooth return trip.

3. Prepare Your Vehicle

If you enjoy off-roading and have modifications to your vehicle, consider making a timestamped video of everything loaded into your truck before leaving home. This can serve as proof that no modifications were made during your trip if questioned upon return to Canada. This step has saved us from potential hassles a couple times.

4. Check Your Cell Phone Plan

Cell phone plans are another important consideration. Canada-US plans can prevent unexpected fees upon re-entry. If your phone connects to a tower across the border, you might be charged a daily fee ranging from $7-$12 CAD. If you don’t have a Canada-US plan, you can try switching your phone to airplane mode and use Wi-Fi, which is often available for free in hotels, restaurants, and shopping centers.

5. Get US Currency – Currency Converter

Visit the ATM before you leave Canada to withdraw some US funds. Despite the exchange rate (currently around 0.73 USD for every 1 CAD), having cash on hand can save you from additional fees associated with using your credit card abroad. Some credit card companies charge extra for foreign transactions, so having cash can help you avoid these charges.

With a bit of preparation and these handy tips and tricks, you’ll be well-equipped to handle any challenges that come your way and make the most of your trip. Safe travels!
