Discovering Haystack Rock and South Beach State Park

We’ve arrived in Oregon!

We were up early this morning, packed up quickly, and we were off. We were heading south down the coastline until we crossed the vast bridge into Astoria. The drive so far is like nothing else. There is so much to look at, and never a dull moment.

Our next stop would be Cannon Beach, where we could see the famous Haystack Rock. The beach here was equally lovely, but the water was comparable to ice. But we all walked into the ocean, and the girls surprisingly went in over their knees. At one point, they were collecting sand dollars, and as Kay bent over, a wave came and splashed her in the face. That was her first taste of salt water.

After about an hour of taking everything in, we continued down the coast again. A tip for Cannon Beach: arrive early in the morning and be prepared to walk some distance from where you end up parking. There is no close parking, and it’s mostly just finding a spot on the side of the road to park. But if you’re able, it’s worth the stop. We will surely return on another trip, as we would love to spend more time at the beach.

Our next stop would be South Beach State Park in Newport, Oregon, where we would camp for the next three nights. We couldn’t wait to set up camp to see what the next few days would bring!
